Hey there,
I went on a lovely walk last weekend through SF that showed off all these what I’m going to call moments. These moments disrupted the flow of the urban landscape. I am being intentionally vague with my description in an effort to abstract this concept to something that can be applied in other areas.
Moments are a feeling. Moments are a place. Moments are a time. Moments ground you in the physical world around you. All of which stands as an antithesis to the way this capitalist world is built, which strives for alienation, dissociation and displacement.
Coming back to my work, I feel like these thoughts are helping me frame this series that I have been working on this year. A series that I had a feeling was connected in some way, but never had the framework to say as much. Getting much closer to finding what that is, and I hope you join me on the journey of discovering that that is. For now, this is what I got.
Each piece is its own little Moment depicting things that are happening in my life and in the world. Moments that I can see necessitate choices. Choices in actions moving forward. Choices in feelings or interpretations of feelings in the present. At some point (maybe soon🤷🏽) I’ll put them all together to hopefully tell a story of some kind. Deeply abstracted but a story nonetheless. A story built around our attempts to live in a world that is actively hostile to differing ways of life that don’t adhere to the “norms” or “values” of “America”. How do we live in a world that doesn’t care for us? How do we shift our being to align with forces we do not want to align with? In what ways am I influenced by that which is around me? How do I connect with that which is around me? What are the ways that I as an individual can influence *gestures broadly outward*? What are the ways that We as a collective can influence *gestures broadly outward*? These are just some of the questions that I am constantly playing through my mind, especially while in the process of creating right now. If anything, I hope I can find a way of presenting it that helps invoke these questions in you and give you the time and space to ponder.
I guess the main thing I want to get across with this post is the fact that it’s very easy to see my work and just see pure abstraction. Shapes and colors flying about with no rhyme or reason. And I 100% can admit some of them are that. But there is more to it than just that. In the past, something that I wrestled with was creation for the sake of creation or creation for a purpose. Both of which I feel have a rebellious flair to them, and depending on the person, more or less so, depending on the type. (Curious what you think about this, please feel free to reach out, would love to start a conversation centered around this topic).
Going to leave this here for right now. More to come. And if you made it this far I really appreciate you investing your most valuable resource (your time) reading my words.
so thank you for your time. 🥰
